Bedding the bride

Bedding the bride was a practice that lasted until the 18th century. Proof that the marriage was consummated was needed. Sometimes this proof was the bed sheet, while other times people stayed in the bedroom to witness the act. If single male witnesses were present, they would make a mad dash to retrieve the bride's garter and stockings because these items indicated who the next to marry would be.
