Wedding bubbles instead of rice
|
Throwing grain (rice) at couples after the wedding ceremony symbolizes the wish
for fertility and a good crop. It is rare for people to throw rice anymore
because it is deadly to birds. A bird's digestive system is very fragile and
they are unable to digest rice. Birds would often eat the rice that was thrown
at the newlyweds and die. Contemporary alternatives to rice include
wedding bubbles,
throwing bird seed or
rose petals.
Some companies sell prepackaged birdseed or personalized wedding bubbles with
the couple's name of it. As people throw birdseed or blow bubbles, church bells
are usually ringing. Noises, like the church bells or the clinking of
champagne
wedding glasses, were believed to drive away jealous spirits. By Nicole Mazzeo Wrapwithus wedding favors |
