Wedding superstitions

• The bride and groom should not see each other on the wedding day before the ceremony because it is bad luck to glimpse the future before it happens.

• Seeing a toad, spider, dove or a lamb on the way to the wedding ceremony is good luck.

• It is lucky for the bride to be kissed by a chimney sweep. The hearth (fire) is the center of the home and chimney sweeps clean the hearth.

• The wedding dress must not be finished (the last few stitches) until immediately before the wedding ceremony. The saying goes “Her happiness, like her dress, will not be complete until she marries.”

• A maid should marry with bare hands and a widow should marry with gloves so the bad luck of the previous marriage doesn’t rub off on her new marriage.

• It is unlucky for brides to make their own wedding dress, although it is perfectly fine for friends or relatives to make a dress for the bride.

• Brides should only try on parts of her outfit at a time and never try on the complete wedding outfit (dress, veil, shoes, etc) until the day of the wedding.
